Mixed-Media Portraits

Concept/Objective
For this project, I really wanted to showcase my ability to use applications and programs I have never used before. In my past semesters I have heard people talk about how much the love procreate more than Adobe Illustrator. So I wanted my main focus to be on how to execute my ideas on procreate and make something I am proud about.

I first made a mood board on Adobe Indesign to gather ideas of what I wanted to accomplish with this project. I also knew that I needed to go and take tons of photos so that I would have plenty to choose from. I knew that I wanted to create the photos in a way that I could make interesting and unique finished products. I wanted to incorporate lines and illustrations to really show off each of my models.
The Problem
I struggled really hard finding people that were willing to let me mess with their photos on procreate. I got one person who let me take portraits strictly for this project in return for a photo shoot of her choosing. I also took Friendsgiving photos and they told me that I could use any of their photos for my project. But when I went through the photos I realized I needed a few more to really help me with my vision. So I took some self portraits and more photos of my roommate.
The Approach
After editing and going through all my photos I was able to start some practice pieces on procreate. This is my first time using procreate and it has a little out of a learning curve to it. I had to really push myself to not get frustrated and keep trying till I got it. I watch tons of videos and asked my friends that were familiar with the app for help. I really wanted to understand and accomplish my goals.

After lots of struggle I have some very rough drafts of what I wanted to accomplish with my finals. And I know that I am finally understanding how procreate works.
The Solution
After playing around with different colors and swirly lines and two photos, I feel like I accomplished my goals of this project. I was able to make five photo edits on procreate that I am proud of. And I know that I have learned a new skill along the way.

I took the drafts that I have created and made the lines cleaner, got rid of any sharp edges to help it flow better. I also stepped out of my comfort zone and really took the time to edit and design some of my self portraits. I also realized that I wasn't a fan of the eyes or how skinny and jagged the lines were, so I thickened them up.
The Learnings
I can say with certainty that I proved to myself that I can learn new software and still love and appreciate the old. I am now able to realize when a project is better suited for procreate or any other software I know how to use. I also can now add to a resume that I know not only the adobe programs but also procreate. I am proud of the work I have show you and am excited to keep creating more and more art!
